Just the title alone sucked me in, plus hey, guys, look--it's a meaningless internet poll! Anyone want to jump in to see if we can help redress the balance voting-wise? (I'm sure you can't imagine who I voted for...) Though yes, the me of ::mumble-mumble:: years ago--the one who had the massive jones for Alan Rickman--is standing off to the side doing this: PS: Just in case y'all didn't see the link at that page--oh, just about a gazillion vocabulary points for use of the term, "gazumped."

Just a small sampling from Sense and Sensibility for those of you who haven't seen it yet (*cough* Illyria *cough). I also was mildly amused by the discussion in the comments, just in terms of the whole, "Which Brandon is better?" folderol. Nice to see some folks do rather appreciate the more recent rendition.

Ooooh ;D I really should try to see this >_> Yes, you really, really should. It's okay, I'll just wait over here while you go watch it. *crosses arms, taps foot impatiently* Since it's still our lovely celia's birthday here in PST, and I know she can read this--she just can't post at present, owing to laptop issues--what better reason to get back to throwing some screencaps at y'all, hmmm? As always, these are courtesy of kitty, and apologies if I've included any that have been posted previously. To start, we've got a couple of the, "Hello, ladies--your order of nineteenth-century studmuffin has arrived!" variety... Moving from there into general smiley-boo territory... Kitty's title for this next is, "I'm NOT Liam Neeson." As I think I've already made my position on this issue abundantly clear, I instead am choosing to enjoy the Major Poufy Hair Goodness we've got happening here. And from here we head straight back into the IZ SRS BZNESS category. Yes, a comedy banner featuring this next photo is totally forthcoming--how could it not?! i haz teh perturbment. Definitely a favourite, only partly because of the, "Bitch, please!" expression. Again, you look up, "RAWR" in the dictionary, and this is what you're likely to see: *sheds a silent tear for the glorious bygone days prior to manscaping* This last is the one that made me literally go, "Awww!" when I opened the file and beheld it for the first time; I can't make any jocular comments about manpain because I'm too busy wishing I could clutch the Colonel inappropriately close to my bosom while saying, "C'mon, buddy, let ye olde funbags cheer you up a little, already!"

Very lovely screencaps! I just finished watching ep.1 today with my friend, who hasn't seen any of the adaptations! She could see why I liked Colonel Brandon. So charming! I'm reading through the book (finally) and am absolutely loving it! I had read parts of it when I was taking Brit Lit in highschool, and I never was able to get around to reading more of it. I had the 1995 version, and fell in love with Colonel Brandon in that one. When I took more interest in Mr. M's filmography, I saw that he was recently in this story, and to my great joy, he was playing my favourite character. There are aspects of each portrayal that I like more than the other, but I must say, I am far more impressed with Morrissey's Colonel Brandon. His expression when he gets his heart broken is priceless, and it hurt to see him in such pain. His attire was also a delight. He can really look the part. ~

Hey Illyria, have you seen Sense and Sensibility yet? You must! *jabs Illyria with a cattle-prod* I just watched it all the way though again on the weekend so I could give my review. It's been so long since I've seen the Ang Lee film. I'm going to see it again soon so I can do a comparison. There are some things that I like very much in this version. I'm happy that I bought the DVD.
I'll get the "unimportant" ie. non-David related stuff out of the way first. The performances were mostly fine, except for Fanny and Anne Steele who were too over top. A lot of people like Hattie's performance. I can't warm up completely to her. Sometimes I wanted to see more emotion in her eyes. The costumes were good. I liked the score except for the main theme which was rather melodramatic. The piano piece that Brandon gives Marianne is lovely. Makes me want to start learning the piano again! ;D
One of the best things in this film is David's Colonel Brandon. I love, love Darcy, especially when portrayed by Colin Firth. DM's Colonel Brandon makes Darcy look like a boy. If Colonel Brandon doesn't become the most wonderful Austen hero after this series, then people are devoid of any taste! ;D David is wonderfully masculine and protective and gorgeous. He makes Brandon a hero that Marianne had to fall in love with, and Charity Wakefield deserves equal credit for showing Marianne falling in love with him. Her growing feelings for Brandon are depicted very subtly with just a few looks. Charity's performance really shone in Marianne's relationships with Willoughby and Brandon. The haircutting scene and the scene at Allanham are some of the most beautiful and erotic scenes I've seen on film. Charity is simply radiant with sensual awakening.
That's enough for now. Illyria, if you watch the film, I could got into more details about the sexy DM moments with you. I don't want to reveal too many spoilers...*looks crafty* ;D

Hah this is yet another DM thing I still haven't watched yet >_> I loved Alan Rickman in the film version though I'll most certainly have to check it out at some point though. Along with the rest of 'Thorne', and State of Play, and... well, a lot of other DMish-ness I still haven't watched >_>

Aside from Blackpool i think S&S is probably my faourite thing i've ever seen DM in. I too was a big fan of Alan Rickman's Colonel Brandon (interestingly, Brandon has always been my favourite period character i always thought him far superior to such as Darcy and Heathcliffe and Rochester) but for me DM blows Rickman out of the water! In fact, he blows him so far out of the water Rickman can no longer see the water!
DM has an amazingly face for showing emotion and the tortured soul of Brandon is one which he can portray very easily. Some of my favourite bits (nothing spoilery for those who have already seen the 1995 version) include when Brandon first happens upon Marianne with Willoughby, and of course him confronting Willoughby about his intentions towards Marriane at the ball. DM is also a tour de force when he catches Marianne after she faints and the look he shoots Willoughby - if looks could kill! Also, the entire fencing scene is FAB. And i particularly enjoy Brandon's brooding when he first hear's Marianne play the piano - and his subsequent inability to deliver her a compliment. The flirting over the dinner table is also wonderful. And but of course when he saves Marianne when she is out on the Moor in the rain. His face when he is told the fever has not yet reached it's crisis point is heartbreaking.
Think i may have gushed enough now. DM on horseback is one of my most favourite things in the whole wide world <3

Brandon has always been my favourite period character i always thought him far superior to such as Darcy and Heathcliffe and Rochester) DM's Brandon is certainly superior to Heathcliffe and Rochester, who didn't do much for me anyway. And I think I've finally outgrown Darcy. DM's Brandon is more dimensional and real and virile. He's man in his prime, baby! ;D Oh yes. To hell with feminism. I just want to run out in the freezing rain and risk pneumonia just to have Brando sweep me into his arms! ;D I love those other moments you've mentioned too. Also, the pain in his face when he asks Elinor if Marianne is engaged to Willoughby. Another favourite scene is when Marianne is at Delaford, and Brandon hold onto to the door as if he's overcome by her presence. Oh who am I kidding? All the DM moments are my favourite. ;D Illyria, if you get hit by a bus tomorrow and died without seeing S&S, you will regret it for all eternity! ;D Rent this DVD today. *sends out suggestive brainwaves to Illyria* Some more non-DM thoughts about S&S. I was very pleased with the natural makeup on the female characters. Nothing is more jarring than a "period" film where everyone has tons of makeup caked on! Pride and Prejudice 05. *cough* The lighting looks very natural too. Candle light actually looks like candlelight. Guess what, I guess my Next Doctor DVD today!!!! I had to get if from Amazon because the DVD was discontinued in Australia. Can you believe it? ?? Who makes these bloody decisions?

LOL ok ok, I'll check it out soon! ;D I've seen clips of it on YouTube at least.
I tend to buy a lot of my DVDs through Amazon UK. They're usually a heck of a lot cheaper than the Aussie releases anyway (Dr Who DVDs are a prime example of that actually, well, the classic ones anyway, not sure about the new stuff).

for me DM blows Rickman out of the water! In fact, he blows him so far out of the water Rickman can no longer see the water! I rented the film again recently to refresh my memory so I could compare the 2 Brandons. It's a superb, elegant adaptation, thought not as flawless as some people claim. A couple of scenes were jarringly over the top eg. Elinor crying at the end, Fanny trying to suffocate Lucy, WTF? ;DI thought Fanny in the series was too nasty and exaggerated, and she isn't better in the film. Dominic Wise is closer to book Willoughby, but I've never been gaga over him the way everyone else is. Emma Thompson is the more expressive Elinor, despite her age. I actually prefer Hugh Grant's Edward, rather to my surprise. I thought he was blah the first time I saw the film. His Edward is appealingly shy yet still has a sense of humour. Dan Steven's Edward is rather aware of his own attractiveness. Kate Winslet excels at fevered passion. Do you think she's the better Marianne? I can't decide. Marianne is a problematic character to me. Now for DM. Yes, he surpasses Alan Rickman for me in looks, acting, and voice. In a couple of scenes, I was unfavourably comparing him with David. Two scenes where AR was really great was when he first sees Marianne, and his expression when she thanks him in the sickbed scene.
