I haven't seen Red Riding yet but I can well believe it. I still feel Bradley Headstone's pain after I don't know how many rewatchings, and it's the same when Ripley breaks down – incredibly touching and moving. Perhaps it's something to do with seeing a strong man cry. At any rate, as we know, nobody, but nobody, does anguish like Mr M. I'd guess it is conscious, because he's an actor who's a master of the telling detail and I suspect nothing he does on screen is entirely accidental. He makes it seem spontaneous though, which is the main thing. Reminds me of something he said in an interview somewhere about how he wanted people to see the character, not think 'here comes Morrissey with his box of tricks'.

Yeah, it is probably to do with him being a 'strong' man, at least in a machismo-y, physical sense. And agreed re cornering the the anguish market...I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head that does it better than he does It depends on how you define 'conscious'...I'd be surprised if he telegraphs every single mannerism he'll adopt prior to entering into a scene, cos that would show up like neon lights. He might, though, be planning on a basic level how his character is meant to react to something (based on all that research he does) and work from there. kitty

Among dabbling in other fangirly activities, I came across this vid. Again, aside from awwwwing, I kept cracking up laughing at his goofiness, but it's endearing goofiness nonetheless ;D kitty

Aaw, he's darling in that clip - thanks for the link! I must confess there is something about young and earnest Mr M. in a Fair Isle tank top that brings out every latent Mrs Robinsonesque tendency I possess
