Most of the press releases regarding South Riding say exactly the same thing, but I did notice that they are accompanied by a varying array of pictures, including the requisite hunky 'n brooding shot, another of the smiley-boo variety and last but not least, one in which our dauntless hero appears vaguely cheesed off.
Maybe it's just because of the recent interview in which Mr. Morrissey bemoaned the lack of decent roles for mature actresses, but I have to confess that my first reaction at Anna Maxwell Martin being his leading lady in this project was, "OMG, how old is she?!" (31, apparently, which really isn't that bad, though she does look a great deal younger, IMO.) I could get incredibly cranky about the whole lack-of-age-appropriateness thing if it were not for knowing what an unwinnable battle it is; when I kvetched to celia about this, she rightly pointed out that the double standard is alive and well, particularly in the entertainment industry, making me realise that getting pissed off about it is essentially a waste of time and energy.
Thus rather than to wander off grumbling, I'll just say that I thought that Ms. Maxwell Martin and Denis Lawson were the best thing in Bleak House (uhm, after Burn Gorman, that is), and she was great on Doctor Who, too; as well, since this is an Andrew Davies adaptation, that essentially guarantees it will be made of naught but win.
