I just wanted to see if anyone else wanted to *squee* with me about Mr. Izzard?
I do love him so... ;D

Were you the one who said you got to see one of his shows? Cos that made me immediately filled with rampant jealousy, and kinda wanting to sentence you to cake or death immediatement (alright, more one than the other, obviously). I adore him, of course--ohmigod, what's not to love? The man's a friggin' genius...though I do wish they'd stop casting him as an American, because IMHO his accent is pretty horrific; perhaps you now understand why the prospect of watching The Reaping has filled me with icy-cold dread, since for every Brit whose accent is well-nigh perfect (cf. Anna Friel in Pushing Daisies), there are so many more whose best efforts are nonetheless made of fail. I'm thinking here of Burn Gorman--who I normally love--but the clip of him from Penelope I saw at YouTube caused me to clap my hands over my ears to stop the blood from spurting out all over the walls. (Are there NO dialect coaches on movie sets to point out we don't in fact hit our consonants that hard?) I know this is just a matter of perception, of course; as wonderful as Hugh Laurie is on House, when you grew up watching Blackadder like I did, he just sounds wrong with all those horrible flat vowels coming out of his mouth. The same goes for most American actors who try to do British accents, of course; I think when you know the way someone actually speaks, it's difficult not to let that colour your perspective (as I'm reminded of what Sophie Aldred said about not being keen on Paul McGann's Doctor just because he used RP instead of his natural Scouse accent). But to steer this tangent halfway back on course, I naturally loved the suggestion of Mr. Izzard as the next Doctor Who (though there's this other guy *cough* who wouldn't have been half bad either ); while I think Matt Smith will be fine as long as the writing holds up--and with Steven Moffat in charge, how could it be otherwise?--wouldn't it have been great to see what Eddie could have brought to the role?

I absolute adore Eddie Izzard. Unfortunately the set of DVD's of his first 6 shows still remain in the hands of my ex-boyfriend in England. It was either give that up or give up my Blackpool DVDs so I think I choose wisely.

I am indeed the one who went to one of his shows, Lilly. In fact, two now ;D I went to see him in London just before Christmas, and even had the pleasure of meeting him afterwards. He was gorgeous, and hilarious, and gorgeous, and ooh, downright gorgeous. And Friday just gone (27th Feb) i went to a "secret" gig he did at a university near to where i live, as a warm-up for him Autumn UK tour. It was a free-for-all for seats and i managed to find one on the front row. He was gorgeous (again), even funnier, and just absolutely amazing. I'm going to see him again in October, managed to get a front row seat through his fanclub and totally cannot wait. I'm a HUGE comedy fan, and Eddie Izzard is my hero. Totally. Absolutely adore the man. Especially in heels My favourite stand-up in "Definitive Article", although i do so love "Dress To Kill" as well, and "Unrepeatable" has a special place in my heart because it's just so...raw.

*once again stifles thoroughly uncharitable stab of resentment* I still haven't seen all of his stuph--a certain other person's C.V. has been dominating my Netflix selections of late--but I think Dress To Kill is probably my favourite, not in the least because of his bit about the guys rolling the rocks to build Stonehenge ("It's not far, is it?"); I wasn't surprised that after living in Swansea, he can do a great Welsh accent (though that's where I used to live too, and my attempts at sounding Welsh are made of fail unless it's, like, three words or less). One reason i was glad he wasn't cast as the next Doctor, though, is that I find Mr. Izzard so excels at being himself--or at least the rendition thereof in his standup persona--that I couldn't imagine all that masses of charm and intelligence having to be tamped down into a single character. Absolutely adore the man. Especially in heels Gotta love a guy who can gad about in heels far better than I can (which admittedly isn't much of a stretch), though I'm pretty sure we couldn't share clothes simply because his taste is considerably more flash than mine...

I would have loved for Eddie to play The Doctor, he would have brought the kind of nautral flare that Tom Baker brought to the role. However, i completely get what you're saying...Eddie is so good at being Eddie; the whimsical, incredibly intelligent, slightly mad-cap social observationist, that him having to tone it down whilst still trying to be himself, albeit scripted, would have been a bit pants, in my opinion. Also, Eddie is so set on "serious" acting ('The Riches', 'Valkyrie') that i think he would have turned the role down anyway. He's also thinking of going into social politics sometime soon, and playing the Doctor might have scuppered his chances of being taken seriously. And the fact that the Doctor often has dire fashion sense...i don't think Eddie would have appreciated that! I'm a big fan of men in heels/skirts/make-up. I think it's an inherent "we could swap clothes" character trait that i have had since i was young...

Also, Eddie is so set on "serious" acting ('The Riches', 'Valkyrie') Ah, yes, Valkyrie...which prompted me to think, "Edster, ol' buddy, much as I may love you and Kenneth Cranham--and despite all those other great British actors--that's not enough to get me to see a Tom Cruise movie. EVAR!!" Hehehe...I like the way you think, missy. I just was curious--is anyone else here following Mr. Izzard at Twitter? I'm endlessly entertained by his apparent obsession with global weather conditions.

I've already posted about this@LJ, but one of the things I love most about Twitter--apart from how it enables me to keep up with my homeys, which is of course the most important element--is the perspective it gives me on other people's lives. For example, it's already confirmed my longstanding belief that Stephen Fry is the quintessential apotheosis of why gay men are the most innately superior beings on the planet; dang, what an immensely sweet, thoughtful guy he is, even if his seemingly boundless self-consciousness does ramp up my Momish Worry about him several more notches. Especially after having my own major health issues, breast cancer survivor Lisa Lynch reminds me every single day of what's truly important via being equally hilarious and heartbreaking. While I totally hate my boobs, as a result of reading her blog the other day I gave 'em both a good squeeze and thanked 'em for hangin' in there. And while Russell Brand seems entertainingly obsessed with himself primarily, his recent blogs about Jade Goody and dolphins only proved what truly moving eloquence he is capable of. Though on a purely personal level, I love having to work within the 140-character limit therein, as it's an excellent exercise in austerity for wordy-arse foos like me.

just to jump in here, I'm following Eddie on Twitter too and Stephen Fry as well. Yay you for jumping in here! Hopefully this is a trend that will continue, y/y? I would never in a million years ask those guys to follow me, cos I know how deluged they are with those kind of requests--not to mention how little of their time is their own already--but I haven't been able to refrain from the occasional comment...like telling Mr. Fry he seriously needs to chill because if his followers don't understand his references, then they clearly have not learned to Work the Google on the Internets Machine. Poor guy seems to think he needs to be the Paragon of Elucidation for every damn clueless sod out there. Or when Mr. Izzard posted the pics of himself and his dad enroute to the D-Day commemoration ceremonies, I couldn't help noting the fact that good looks clearly run in the family. (My dad's a WWII vet too--yeah, I was his little late-in-life surprise--but thankfully he never saw any action except in the air; as it happens, the first thing he ever dropped on Germany was not a bomb but rather one of his shoes that fell off unexpectedly. Yes, klutziness is most definitely an inherited trait as well...)

Hey, I just watched Unrepeatable for the first time tonight, and especially given that I was lying on a heating pad attempting to alleviate massive cramps at the time--oh, the glory of womanhood!--I definitely appreciated the extra endorphin rush from laughing so much. It's especially fascinating to watch the metamorphosis of Mr. Izzard's act over time--what schticks he used to do, and how he used to explore concepts then as opposed to now. Fan of consistency that I am, of course I love how divinely silly he was then, the exact same way that he still is today.

I watched Revengers Tragedy this weekend and have to say how impressed I was with Mr. Izzard's performance therein. Definitely the most compelling work I've seen him do since Velvet Goldmine (which being one of my favourite movies I have zero objectivity about anyway).
I also did an inadvertent *fist pump* and w00t! at the fact that in the commentaries, Mr. Izzard nicely validated my private opinion that Derek Jacobi looked like a panto version of Karl Lagerfeld. ;D

He's doing a politics lecture at my local uni...which i'm going to at 5pm...then at 10.30pm he's doing a stand-up gig at my local theatre! I think i might actually die of over-exposure to Mr. Izzard. Still, what a way to go!!

You lucky, lucky thing! Hey, let us know if and/or how much he references the weather, k? Though at this point I suspect that perhaps he confines this ongoing absorption to Twitter, more or less; still, when he was in LA this past week and mentioned the appalling temperatures, I couldn't resist tweeting him back to say that as if I didn't have enough to apologise for about the US to begin with, I now was compelled to add the abysmal Cali weather to the list.
