Sorry, Kitty and I went off at a confusing tangent and were talking about Cause Célèbre, which I'd only found as Region 1. One Summer is indeed only available as Region 2 as far as I know (unfortunately the distributors probably imagine it has only limited appeal outside the UK - wrong though we know that to be).

I've been watching One Summer over the weekend, so I thought I'd offer a few thoughts prior to posting some caps (I've taken loads . I was just that bit too young to watch this when it was first screened, but it was interesting to read on the One Summer fansite how deep an impression it made on many people who saw it in 1983 and never forgot it. Having seen it, I'm not surprised – it's powerful and moving stuff, and it's dated surprisingly little in the intervening 26 years. I liked the combination of grit and humour in the script, and it has three very strong central performances – from both boys and from James Hazeldine as the enigmatic Kidder, who takes Billy and Icky in when they're wandering the Welsh countryside (where as Icky says there's 'nothing but bleedin' mountains') with nowhere to stay. The dynamic of the relationship between the two boys, and between them and Kidder, was beautifully and sensitively done, and I especially liked the way that the script and performances allowed space for a certain ambiguity rather than feeling the need to spell everything out and tie the relationships down to a single reading. I'm sure that that ambiguity is part of the reason why it resonated with so many viewers. As for Mr M. – it took a few minutes for me to adjust to the realisation that he was ever a) that young and b) that skinny – all arms and legs and cheekbones. (Curiously enough, it seems that the familiar babyfaced, cherubic look only emerged when he was a little older and had filled out a bit.) He's so young that he's almost unrecognisable, though there are moments – as here – where, school uniform notwithstanding, he suddenly looks entirely like his grown-up self (I think it's the frown and the side parting that does it). As for his acting, obviously I'm hugely biased, but I like to think that even as an impartial viewer I would be struck by the maturity and naturalism of his performance here, which is all the more remarkable from a young actor in his debut. Spencer Leigh as Icky is excellent too (and gets most of the one-liners) but Billy is the more complex of the two boys, and consequently the more challenging role. Billy is bright enough, and sensitive enough, to recognise the squalor of his life and realise there must be something better – even if he has only a vague idea of what that better might be, and even less idea of how to reach it. He's already hardened and distrustful from years of drifting, lovelessness and neglect, but there is idealism and vulnerability under the cynical, hostile exterior (early manifestation of the celebrated Morrisseyan duality there). When he talks about how his mam hates him ('When I was a kid, she liked me then…') it's heartbreaking. I was interested to read about Willy Russell's objections to the casting. I can see why he might have had issues, if only because the script clearly intends Icky and Billy to be 15/16, and Masters Leigh and Morrissey are (and look) 17 going on 18. Willy Russell was presumably imagining little runty kids, whereas young DM, skinny though he is, already has physical presence and towers over everyone, even Kidder. I can see too that some of the action – especially the boyish playfighting and horsing around – is more characteristic of fifteen year olds than seventeen year olds. Both SL and DM successfully project a quality of naivety and innocence, though (Billy's shyness and awkwardness around the Welsh girl who fancies him is a joy to behold) and in one sense the fact that Billy, in particular, is a little older makes the story more touching – the possibility that at this age, on the verge of manhood, the opportunity to make something of his life may already have slipped from his grasp is very poignant. Anyway, enough of my wittering – time for the first batch of caps. It's tempting just to post a load of doey-eyed close-ups, but in the interests of variety and of communicating the true gangly teenage awesomeness of young Mr Morrissey in this role I’ll try and mix things up a bit... Spencer Leigh looks very pretty here too (as well as seeming momentarily hypnotised by the blue gaze of The Morrissey): These next three support Kitty's remark that not everyone looks this beautiful when they're sad: That last one especially I find a real heartstopper. And finally, just for maximum aaw... Bless

Please, kind miss, witter further. Force yourself, if necessary. Given how adorable Mr. Morrissey was then, I'm once more immensely thankful that most photographic documentation of me at that age is thankfully not accessible to the general public--though as I mentioned at the initial LJ post I did about One Summer, it's difficult not to sporfle at the fact that I had a turquoise stripey shirt almost exactly like that, except mine had ruffles...and of course boobs meant I filled it out a tad differently, too. I'm almost tempted to say that first shot strikes me as being the nascent version of the Squinchy-Faced Angst Syndrome to come, but that feels vaguely disrespectful, particularly given how I'm now heading off to bed chock fulla awww at this entire assortment of screencaps. *sleepy smile* In case I haven't mentioned it lately, you absolutely ROCK, hon.

Wow yeah, I second that...please feel free to keep wittering As if I haven't already been convinced, your post has got me thinking, "Gawd, I really, really ought to try and get my mitts on this DVD!" As for Mr M. – it took a few minutes for me to adjust to the realisation that he was ever a) that young and b) that skinny – all arms and legs and cheekbones. If my reaction to Cause Celebre is any indication, then I'm resigned to the fact that I will continue to struggle adjusting to that particular realisation That is mind-numbingly freaky, I must say *giggles fitfully at idea of 'grown-up' DM wearing a school uniform* While we could be accused of bias in that regard, me thinks there's been enough public and critical praise levelled at this series (judging by what I've seen online, anyways) and its stars to suggest that yours would be a pretty reasonable assessment of his performance Yeah, I should probably stop doing that *slaps self on wrist several times* And thanks for these caps, awesome, as per usual BTW, the girl looks like she's got a major Kylie-in-Neighbours-Charlene-sque type perm too ;D As for the 'shorty-shorts' pics, mmmm... toite Aw, supporting photographic evidence is always appreciated *beams* I'll work quickly, as I tend to suffer mesmeritis whenever I look at shots of him sleeping, but this... immediately got me thinking of this... Spot the difference, eh? kitty

*now laughing helplessly at documentation of the little-known phenomenon of masculine camel-toe in Daisy Dukes* Yeah, I should probably stop doing that *slaps self on wrist several times* You'll do no such thing, I hope!

Seconded - there's no such thing as too many doey-eyed close-ups *carefully writes this down as possible banner logo* And I must congratulate you on yet again sending me off to bed feeling remarkably like a dirty old woman as a result. LOL!! That reminds me of my initial reaction to what I refer to as Nu Hu--after being an old-timey "classic" *gag* Doctor Who fan--which was the episode, "42," and afterwards, I asked my friend, "So, does this Doctor always run like a complete spaz?" A rather commendable extent of Eyelash Porn in that last shot, btw. I would keep staring at it were it not for the distinct sensation I could be arrested for wannabe corruption of a minor.

Today's batch of pics has been selected for maximum fresh-faced boyishness. No responsibility will be taken for any feelings of wrongness that may result Good to know that my omnipresent thought of, "Oh jeez, I am sooo going to hell for what I'm thinking about now..." is readily apparent to all and sundry. I took the liberty of lightening it up a tad, and now can definitely see what you mean. In contrast to what I said about that photo of DT as a young 'un, that right there is the epitome of youthful dreaminess minus any discernable self-consciousness whatsoever.

Today's batch of pics has been selected for maximum fresh-faced boyishness. No responsibility will be taken for any feelings of wrongness that may result LMAO, this constant jibing between you and Lilly re the young DM amuses me no end And thanks again for these gorgeous pics! I just can't help but crack up at his gangliness ;D Just a few notes: - I love that second one, where he's exhibiting a bit of attitude: "Yes, I'm looking at porn--what the f*** are you staring at?" - I know he's still filling out, but gawd, that shot of him shirtless lying on the tree branch Awwwwwww...heartily agreed In contrast to what I said about that photo of DT as a young 'un, that right there is the epitome of youthful dreaminess minus any discernable self-consciousness whatsoever. While you already know my views re the appeal of young DT's self-consciousness, I do agree re that bedtime pic of Mr. M. And thankfully, he doesn't seem to have lost that innocent quality, even as he's matured kitty

Ya know, I usually try to refrain from posting until I have something halfway intelligent--or indeed, even remotely intelligible--to say.
However, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be capable of coherence for quite some time to come. Talk amongst yourselves, mmkay?

As I'm likely to be without full internet access for much of the festive season, this seems a good time to wish my fellow DMFers, both registered and lurking, a very happy Christmas and New Year, with the help of a picture made by David B at http://one-summer.tv83.net: It'll make more sense if you've seen One Summer, or rather, this bit. Merry Christmas all! See you in the New Year xx
